Grand Knight's Message
Fr. Gary has graciously offered to decorate a tree for the KC Hall for the Christmas season and has asked that each Knight family donate an ornament for the tree. Each ornament will be tagged with the family name and year and you will be able to visit the hall with your children to see your ornament on the tree.  Ornaments can be brought to the KC Hall where there is an ornament box on the porch for your convenience.  Ornaments can also be dropped off at the home of Br. Bill and Sue Flatley at 1424 Applewood Drive in Keller.  If you have any questions, you can call Sue at 817-577-4817.

Please have your ornament delivered in time to be tagged and on the tree by our next business meeting on Dec. 4.

A SEAS first grade room Mom has asked for St. Nick to make a brief appearance at the school about 11:00 am on Friday, 12/5/08.  If you are able that Friday and would like to play St. Nick for about 30 minutes, please call Edwin McGillick at 817-229-8322.  The Knight who volunteers to be St. Nick will not be alone.  Edwin and/or Jack Zwit should be available to help. We're just looking for that special jolly soul!

We're in need of a new chairman for Vegas Night coming up on Feb. 22. If you can help and are interested in taking over the chairman's responsibility, please let me know asap!

In case you've missed it, there's a case similar to Terri Schiavo's being acted out in Italy right now.  Eluana Englaro is a young disabled woman who has been in a state of diminished consciousness since a car accident in 1992.  Her father, now with the backing of the highest court of appeals in Italy, wants to end her life be removing her food and hydration tubes.  The Misericordine nuns of Lecco who run the hospice where she has been living for the past 14 years are standing up to the government and refusing to remove them.   In a letter published in yesterday's daily newspaper of the Italian Bishops Conference, the nuns said, "Our hope, and that of many like us, is that the death by hunger and thirst of Eluana, and others in her condition, will not be carried out. That is why, once again, we maintain our availability, today and into the future, to continue to serve Eluana. If there are those who consider her dead, let Eluana remain with us who feel she is alive. We don't ask anything but the silence and the liberty to love and to devote ourselves to those who are weak, poor and little in return."   You gotta love our Catholic nuns!!!

If you haven't already, it's time to educate yourself on the The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA).  President-elect Obama promised Planned Parenthood this summer that it would be the first law he'd sign when he became president.  FOCA will eliminate every law against abortion in every state with the stroke of a pen.  Our US Bishops have called it an "evil law" and one that the Catholic Church will fight and consider a direct attack on Christianity if it is enacted.  You can learn more here:  What is FOCA?  Sign the Fight FOCA petition.  Become a member of the Catholic Action Team.

Every Knight should understand it and be able to talk to friends and neighbors about it.  It is evil and must not be allowed to be passed into law.

Finally, I though you might also appreciate the commentary by Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, at the very bottom of this newsletter for her perspective on the historical significance of the presidential election and the new challenges it presents.

Faithfully yours,
Joe Jordan
Grand Knight

Chaplain (Fr. Gary)
Dear Knights,

This is the last Sunday of the liturgical year (cycle A) and next weekend we will begin the Advent season - the new liturgical year (cycle B readings.)

Today's Gospel:  Matthew  25:31-46

In this era of the church, in this period of Christ's reign, how is his power being manifest, in what way are his subjects witnessing to his authority?  Matthew's gospel answers these and other questions concerning the presence of Christ's kingdom in the world today.  Wherever one recognizes the light of Christ in the eyes of the hungry ... wherever the stranger is taken by the hand of friendship, in these places and in these hearts is the kingship of Christ established and perpetuated.

Unique to the Matthean version of the good news, the scene depicted in today's story is actually a compilation of several different literary genre at various levels of interpretation.  A dramatic conclusion to the liturgical or church year, the central points of the text are the short simile about the sheep and the goats (vv.35-39, 40b, 41-45).  To the early church we owe the combination of the simile and sayings as well as the implied allegorization, and the evanelist has provided the introduction, conclusion and contextual framework.  Following his three judgment parables, today's gospel provides the criteria by which Matthew believes the eschatological judge will formulate his verdict.  Similar judgment scenes can be found in Jewish literature popular at the time of Jesus, in the rabbinical midrash to psalm 118 and in the Egyptian Book of the Dead.  But, while there are definite corollaries in these other literatures, the gospel retains the unique feature that the criterion for judgment will be love, active love, overflowing into simple deeds of goodness and charity.  In the loving acts of giving water to the thirsty and clothes to the naked, the believer can discover the presence of Christ reigning within  the hearts of his people and by those same deeds can profess his faith in that presence.  These small, routine and seemingly insignificant deeds have ramifications of eternal proportions for the believer and upon these shall we be separated, like wheat from chaff, sheep from goats.

When Jesus used the simile of the sheep and goats in his preaching, he borrowed his metaphor directly from Palestinian life.  By day, sheep and goats were pastured and tended together.  Toward evening, however, the animals were separated from one another by their shepherd.  Sheep are hardier animals and can endure the cold Palestinian night but goats need shelter.  The point of the metaphor is not the comparison of sheep and goats but the separation of the two by the royal judge.  Like the parable of the wheat and the weeds and of the dragnet, separation (i.e., judgment) is left until the harvest time or end time and is to be accomplished only by the eternal shepherd-king.

At its basic level, (during Jesus' ministry), the criterion for separation was the acceptance or rejection of Jesus' message, and that separation anticipated the ultimate judgment.  It should be noted that the simile was addressed to Jesus' disciples and hence what is said of Jesus and his message would apply as well to his disciples and their preaching.  Those who accept or reject the good news as preached by Jesus' disciples in the 80s or even in 2000s are thereby separated and judged.

One may not overlook the fact that only here in all the gospels is the role of king actively accepted by Jesus.  While this identification of the Son of Man (v. 31) with the shepherd-king may be evidence of a later level of interpretation (church and evangelist), it does, nevertheless, underscore Jesus' royal dignity and equality as Son at the right hand of the Father.

--In concluding, we come full circle to our first question:  How is the power of the Son of Man-shepherd-king manifest within his kingdom today?  How does his church translate the reality of his reign into significant acts of power?  From the gospel, we learn that it is not by earth-shaking deeds or headline-making activities.  Simple acts of love, of which anyone, at any time, is capable, are the deeds which wield his power as emissaries of our king -- such are the actions whereby his authority is established.  A frightening and yet challenging thought remains with us from today's gospel:  those who were condemned to eternal punishment were separated from the just, not for dastardly deeds or heinous crimes, but for the little acts of love they had neglected to do.  In failing to feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned, etc., they had summarily rejected not only their king and his reign but their own inheritance of salvation as well.  While we still enjoy the mercy of time, we can awaken ourselves to the presence of Christ's reign and seek out the message of need in the faces of the poor and the downtrodden.  In doing so, we shall discover the power of our king and establish his reign of peace and love in a very difficult world.  (Pat Sanchez)

Brother Knights:  wear your badges and be men of faith, an example to family and church.  Do what Jesus tells you to do, if you understand it or not -- obedience always brings blessing.  We are beginning the holiday season: PACE yourselves; put God first and everything will end up in the proper place at the proper time - put the world first and you'll be burnt out before Christmas and probably on xanax - I am speaking from experience.

God Bless,
Fr. Gary Geurtz
Chaplain - Council 759 - Keller, TX

Congratulations to our new 3rd Degree Knights, Dave Hargis and Harold Leeman!

They were exemplified on Sunday, November 9 at Council #4709 in Fort Worth.

Our next 1st Degree will probably be in January.  We expect a major degree shortly afterwards.  Start working on your candidates now, and for you 1st Degree members, plan to attend the major degree.  We'll get the details out as soon as we have them.

Church Director (Andy Bahl)
My Brother Knights------
I have been one of those who "protested quietly" against taking the class for sensitivity training.  I saw no reason for lectors and EM's to need such a thing and it was only because of an over reaction that it was being required.  After a talk with Candy Warner Sunday morning, I have changed my mind.  Do any of us need it, I certainly hope not. Can we benefit from it, I do believe we can.  Your work with the youth demands it, and we do a lot of work with youth as Knights.  But is also an educational experience that will be well worth your time.  If you feel the need to ask me more, I will be at the meeting on November 6th.  I will be signing up today with my wife.   I encourage all who have not taken the seminar already to do the so as soon as possible.

I encourage all my brother Knights to pray the Rosary daily ---
with your family, in the car to/from work, whatever.

When going to Church, dress properly, and be courteous when others
want to enter your pew ---- move in.

Community Store House update (Tom Jones)
The Keller Community Store House is requesting help during the upcoming holiday season. They especially need help when the families come by to pick up holiday dinners for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They will need help boxing and distributing food starting now through Nov. 22 for Thanksgiving and then again from Nov. 24 through Dec. 20 for Christmas.  Even volunteering for half days is a big help.  It's a great opportunity for the entire family to volunteer to help out. If you can help out, please contact Br. Tom Jones
sktomjones@msn.com or call Donna Haggerty the Volunteer Coordinator at 817-431-3340

Message from Monique Schill -

The Greater Southlake Women's Society is sponsoring an event called the Festival of Trees being held in the Southlake town square November 21-23.  It is an event to raise money for their many charities. We will be decorating a Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees in honor of Beautiful Feet. We are being sponsored by Murco Wall Products.  There will be a box out front of each tree for people to place donations into. The tree with the most donations will be judged the winner.  After we have determined who the winner is, we will be auctioning off the trees. All proceeds from the auction and donations will go to Beautiful Feet.  There is a $5 dollar viewing/entrance fee which goes to GSWS charities.  Please come out this weekend and vote on your favorite tree and help us to raise money for those less fortunate than ourselves.  If you have any questions contact Monique Schill 817-821-6539.  You can go to our website for more information; http://www.greatersouthlakewomenssociety.com/

Burritos/Sausages Team (Dan Weed)
There will be NO Burrito cook in Dec. due to the holiday activities.  We'll be back on schedule starting again in January.

Columbian Squires (Allan Thompson)
The Squires did a great job selling their services to put together Thanksgiving meals as an alternative for parishioners to buying their own to donate to the needy.  They will be delivering 82 meals along with 35 turkeys they were able to purchase this Saturday!

Nice job Squires!

Building Management (Ken Robinson)
I realize that some of you have heard discussion concerning the new Building Committee Management Team. The committee was formed a few months ago in order to try and stay on top of repairs and improvements to your hall. Our meetings will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.00 pm. "I know"....not another meeting!  The reason for this is simple. We have a lot of factions using the hall on different days. We picked this day, so as to be able to report our progress and ideas to the officers the next Thurs. As your building manager I need your support with this committee along with your input and ideas. How can you help? Try to make some meetings or show up on the scheduled work days and help for an hour or so. Thank you...

Blood Drive (Ken Robinson)
Just a reminder to those of you who gave blood at the last drive and to those who were unable at that time to participate.  We will be having another Blood Drive (at the KC Hall) on Sunday Nov. 30th from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm.

Let's make this one better than the last. Mark your calendars NOW!  See more details and how to sign up for a time below.

We had a great turnout of over 20 Knights and their ladies last Thursday night at Bill & Sue Flatley's for the initial planning meeting for our New Year's Eve party.  Based on the enthusiasm and the ideas discussed it looks like it's going to be another great success.  If you're interested in helping but were not able to join us last week, please contact Bill Flatley at 817-614-7139.

Catholic Radio / PR Committee (Joe McGoogin)
KATH 910 had its fall Radiothon last month in honor of the Year of St. Paul.  Although I only managed to put an hour in this time because I was working on early elections for Tarrant County, many of you and other folks from the parish went to volunteer and make pledges.  We have reached a goal of $250,000+ some previous cash pledges.  Also we have scheduled a KJON 850 EN ESPANOL radiothon coming up in the near future (TBA).  If you have made pledges in the past, but are behind on keeping up with them, please catch up and resume your monthly donations.  If you have had economic problems arise, please pray for YOUR station to be supported by others.  I have met with Father Hennessy regarding the station's activities within the parish.  He is agreeable to help our network in any way that he can.  When we want to do something special, I will be the liaison between him and the stations to obtain approval.

ATTENTION KNIGHTS!  Radio station manager, Dave Palmer, sends his thanks for your continued support and asks that if you have any announcements to be made, please submit them to the station a month in advance.  If it is last minute, he said that he will do what he can, but could not guarantee it being broadcast on time.  Since this is a relatively new committee, the public relations piece has yet to be developed.  I would like to know more about the local media such as the Keller Citizen, for example, in getting announcements, news releases, statements, etc., regarding KOC #759's relations with its surrounding community.  I had some exposure and experience to news releases, etc., while a member of the NJ Jaycees and the NJ Young Republicans in the 1970's.  However, times have changed and if there are any journalism or media people in our realm, please make some suggestions.  My co-chairman, Andy Bahl, has experience in the media.  I will be talking to him in the near future for suggestions.

Thanks for your support!
GOD bless,
Joe McGookin, Jr., SFO

Fourth Degree (Ralph Foster)
I wanted to remind everyone that this Sunday will be our pancake feed. SK Mike Moore is requesting a lot of help. I do not think that SK Felix Mira will be there to help with the cooking. So please come and help if you can. Report time is 6:00 AM. SO mark your calendras for this event.

Thanks for all you do in support of our assembly and the Church.

God Bless Ralph Foster FN

We all know the old adage – the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence.  When it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage offered by another company, the adage holds true.  Perceptions are deceiving.  A move to the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet – in some cases, a lot less.  That's why it pays to remember another old saying – Read the fine print.

There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of Columbus or with another company.  I'll focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing coverage here – pitfalls that an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention.

First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period - typically two years -  after the contract is issued.  Chances are this is no longer an issue with your current coverage.

Second, it's unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able to obtain with your existing contract.  The two factors that determine how much you'll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health.  Certainly, you're older now than you were when you took out your current coverage.  There's no way around that one.  And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time?  Is your blood pressure the same?  Your cholesterol?  Have you gained weight?  All these factors affect the amount of coverage you'll get for your premium dollar.

If someone encourages you to replace – or worse, drop - your existing coverage, please call me.  I'll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest.

I'm at 817-519-8993 or
Robert.peffers@kofc.org.  Call me – let's talk.

Wear your KC Badge; Be a greeter at any door; Be an EM.

How do I get started or involved?

Each Mass usually has a led usher who organizes making the collection during mass. Seek out this person and tell them you want to be a greeter. He will help you get started. If no one seems to be running the show, then just pick a door and greet people. It may seem awkward at first but that will pass. If you want to usher the mass just tell the led usher you want to help with the mass. If he has an opening he will sign you up.

If you want to be an Extraordinary Minister (EM), you should take a training class. Call me if that is the case. If you have already had this training, there is a sign in book in the front of the church that you can signup in. Usually there is someone their too help you.
